Linear Calendar - Year

Time perception is really complex to understand. You will invite the child to observe, feel and live, regularly and concretely, the time diversfying events and favoring the experience.

Repeating through a ritual create an interest, that’s why it’s really important to use it throughout the year.

Sometimes, the child may get bored of this repetition, and care must be taken to make the child a player of the timeline (write an activity down to a paper and stick it to the calendar, like in an diary) in order to create an interest.

What concept is tackled with the timeline calendar ?
The timeline calendar permit the child to get a time perception, to position himself/herself in it and to identify a past, a present or a future event. Each year is unique and that is why the timeline calendar can’t be perpetual. With your help, the child will add the important days like birthdays, saint’s days, parties, sticking photos or texts below the year line. In this way, the child will be able to position himself/herself in time moving everyday a little clothes peg (or an element stuck with Blutack) indicating the current date. So you will keep memories, and you will be able to combine the calendar and the anniversary ceremonies (because even if the birthdays come back each year, the year is not the same).
What to do on the 31st of december ?
Ask the child to look at the linear calendar, guide him/her in this observation : it’s an opportunity to share feelings attached to memories.Put your finger on the 1st january and say « the year 201… started on the 1st of January, then slide it to the 31st of December mentioning each month when you point them, and say « the year 201*… ends on the 31st of December ».You can add – according to the child age – « 365 days have passed, the Earth went around the Sun… »Then take the next year line and say « the year 201* is over and the year 201* is starting ! »

Feature :

- Stick the linear calendar onto a wider white paper or stick sheets of white paper on all the length of the timeline calendar to have the place of stick tickets (or something else), and to write under the important dates !

- Stick the linear calendar onto a 1cm lenght of wood that you fix to the wall. So, the space between the wall and the calendar allow you to move the clothes pin easier.
